It all started with a smoker…

Max Cochran – Pit Master/ Founder of Sweet Penelope’z BBQ & Catering, LLC.

adams county fair winI bought my first smoker in 2000. I had spent several years previous watching and reading about smoking meats but work always got in the road. I spent the next nine years studying and cooking for friends, family and neighbors. I would wake my neighbors at 3 AM with the aroma of BBQ coming in their open windows, so inviting them to dinner helped keep peace in the neighborhood. In 2010 I had the good fortune of teaming up with Dana Cotter, not only as my partner in life but also in BBQ, and we took my BBQ to the next level. We worked developing a varied menu of BBQ and sides dishes that family and friends happily tested for us. In 2014 we decided to enter the Keensburg People’s Choice BBQ contest. The theme for the contest was the 50’s so Dana and Lorna Grein, Dana’s sister, made a 50’s Diner for our contest booth. We won the event for BBQ and decorations plus had numerous people inquired where our diner was located. This started the wheels in motion to make our BBQ company a reality. First thing was a name. What better choice than to name it after Dana’s pet potbellied pig. The name Sweet Penelope’z BBQ was born. We spent the next two years designing a food trailer and getting financing. We catered for various companies and weddings during this time. In 2016 we entered the Keensburg cook-off again with the same winning results of first place. Our trailer was finally finished by Smokin Joe’s Trailers of Texas in October. On November 25th, 2016 Sweet Penelope’z BBQ and Catering officially open for business.

Our deepest thanks to Lorna Grein and Jennifer Cotter, Dana’s daughter, for all their help through the years and still today.
